What is the West Shore BID?
The West Shore Business Improvement District (WSBID) is an organization of industries dedicated to building a state-of-the-art waterfront region along the West Shore of Staten Island. Our mission is to work with public and private sectors to realize the full economic potential of this critical geographic area which is poised to serve markets around the world.
Founded in July 2015 with the support of the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC), the Mayor’s Office, and former New York City council member Steven Matteo, as well as the Staten Island Economic Development Corporation (SIEDC), the WSBID has provided much needed services including infrastructure improvements, streetscape maintenance, signage, government navigation services, and collective advocacy on behalf of key challenges and opportunities impacting our businesses.

The Geography of the WSBID
The WSBID runs adjacent to the Arthur Kill separating New Jersey and Staten Island. On its northern tip, the West Shore ends at the Kill Van Kill waterway while at the southern tip, it reaches the southernmost point of New York state at the Raritan Bay.
The WSBID is located in the northwest quadrant of Staten Island, NY, adjacent to the Arthur Kill waterway. It contains approximately 230 acres, with 70 current businesses. Active commercial businesses within the BID include retail, industrial, bus depot, recreational, and construction uses. The WSBID is one of the four industrial BIDs in New York City and supports over 50 industrial and manufacturing firms. The area is also a designated NYS Brownfield Opportunity Area and NYC Industrial Business Zone.
The WSBID is a balanced combination of technology and nature. The region features multimodal transportation infrastructure including two automobile connections to New Jersey via the Goethals Bridge and Outerbridge Crossing, as well as one rail connection to New Jersey via the Arthur Kill Vertical Lift Bridge. The West Shore of Staten Island is serviced by the West Shore Expressway, which runs north/south of the Island as well as Interstate 278 (Staten Island Expressway) which provides an automobile route to Brooklyn and the rest of New York City. The WSBID also contains direct access to the Arthur Kill waterfront and serves as a port and terminal for a variety of industries that access the Tri-State region. The area is equipped to host heavy manufacturing as most of it is zoned for M1 and M3 land use.
Alongside its infrastructure, the WSBID also consists of marshlands that host numerous ecologies of plants, trees, and wildlife. Many animals call the West Shore home including white-tailed deer, raccoons, opossums, squirrels, chipmunks, rabbits, and a variety of birds such as hawks, owls, and songbirds. The marshlands of the WSBID provide a natural barrier to mitigate the impacts of climate change and encompass vast areas of open space.
